JOIN OUR COMMUNITY CHOIR NOW!

The Asheville Senior Chorus is proud to have spent over two decades fostering a sense of community and partnership through the power of song. We recognized the importance of engaging with our local communities from the moment our organization was established. With an extensive repertoire spanning from Bach to the Beatles and beyond, we aim to captivate audiences and bring people together through the universal language of music. Since our first season, we have established a tradition of actively participating in civic events and ceremonies. Through these performances, we strive to connect with individuals from all walks of life and create lasting memories that resonate within our communities. It is no secret that singing has numerous physical and emotional benefits. Beyond its pure enjoyment, singing promotes well-being by reducing stress levels, improving breathing techniques, boosting confidence, and enhancing overall mental health.

The Asheville Senior Chorus wholeheartedly believes in harnessing these positive effects for ourselves as performers and those who listen to our harmonies.

New Asheville Senior Chorus members are always welcome, and no audition is required.

Why Join the Asheville Senior Chorus?

Joining our chorus isn’t just about singing – it’s about becoming part of a supportive community that celebrates music, builds lasting friendships, and enriches your life. Here’s what members love about us:

  • Make Lasting Friendships – Connect with 50+ singers who share your love of music and community. Many of our members have been with us for years and consider the chorus their second family.
  • Perform on Real Stages – Experience the joy of performing in front of appreciative audiences across Asheville and Western North Carolina. No pressure – you perform because you want to, not because you have to.
  • Sing Diverse Music – From Bach and Handel to Beatles and Broadway, our repertoire spans classical, show tunes, pop, rock, folk, and spirituals. There’s something for every musical taste.
  • Build Vocal Confidence – Our director and accompanist create a nurturing environment where you’ll grow as a singer and gain confidence in your voice, regardless of where you’re starting from.
  • Improve Your Health – Research shows that group singing reduces stress, improves respiratory health, enhances cognitive function, and combats isolation – all while having fun.

What to Expect at Your First Rehearsal

Nervous about showing up? That’s completely normal, and you won’t be alone. Every member started exactly where you are. Here’s what your first rehearsal will look like:

  • Arrive 10 Minutes Early – Come a few minutes before 6:15 PM so you can meet Chuck (our director) and get oriented. There’s usually coffee and a welcoming atmosphere.
  • Meet the Group – You’ll be introduced to the chorus members. Don’t worry about remembering names – everyone is friendly and excited to welcome new singers.
  • Warm-Up Exercises – We start with fun vocal warm-ups. These are designed to be enjoyable, not intimidating. You’ll hear lots of laughter.
  • Learn One Song Together – You’ll jump right in and sing with the group. This is the best part – you’ll feel the energy of singing with others immediately.
  • Social Time – After rehearsal ends at 8:15 PM, many members stick around to chat. This is where friendships really start.

Here’s the truth: No experience is needed. We have singers who’ve never sung before, singers returning to music after decades, and lifelong musicians. We also have members who can’t read music – we teach you everything you need to know.

  • Show Tunes: Rogers & Hammerstein, modern musicals, and Broadway favorites
  • Pop & Rock: Beatles, Elton John, and contemporary artists
  • Folk & Spirituals: American traditions, folk songs, and spiritual arrangements
  • Seasonal Favorites: Holiday classics and special arrangements for our holiday concert

Every season brings new music to learn and new ways to challenge yourself musically.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do I need singing experience?

A: No! We have members with zero experience and members who’ve sung their whole lives. Our director, Chuck, creates an environment where everyone learns and grows together. If you can carry a tune in a bucket (or even if you can’t), you’re welcome here.

Q: What if I’m nervous about singing with a group?

A: Everyone feels nervous at first – that’s completely normal. The chorus is designed to be supportive and non-judgmental. You’ll be surrounded by people who understand exactly how you feel. Most members say their nervousness disappears after the first or second rehearsal.

Q: Can I attend just one rehearsal to try it out?

A: Absolutely! Come as a guest and see if it’s right for you. No commitment, no pressure. We want you to feel comfortable before you decide to join.

Q: Is there an audition?

A: Never. We believe every voice matters and every person deserves to experience the joy of singing with others. There are no auditions, no cut-offs, and no judgment.

Q: What if I can’t make every rehearsal?

A: Life happens. We understand that you may need to miss rehearsals occasionally. We ask that you do your best to attend regularly so you can learn the music and build relationships with the group, but we’re flexible.

Q: Do I need to read music?

A: It helps, but it’s not required. We teach members who don’t read music, and many of our singers learn by ear. Chuck will help you along the way.
