At Asheville Senior Chorus, we know that even the most seasoned performers can feel their hearts race before a concert. That’s why we make supporting each other just as important as hitting the right notes.
We Start with Support
From the very first rehearsal, we work to create a welcoming space where everyone feels safe, encouraged, and seen. Whether you’re a first-time singer or a long-time member, you’re never alone in your nerves. We check in, we laugh, and we remind each other: it’s okay to be a little nervous. It means you care.
Confidence grows in rehearsal. Our structured practice routines are designed to prepare us not only musically, but emotionally. Repetition builds muscle memory, and familiar faces build trust. By the time we hit the stage, we’ve already built a foundation of support and togetherness.
One of the best parts of being in a choir is that you’re never singing solo—literally or figuratively. We stand side by side, breathe together, and blend our voices. If you need a reassuring smile or a squeeze of the hand backstage, someone’s always there.
Performances aren’t tests—they’re celebrations! We try to keep the mood light and fun, reminding ourselves that sharing music is a gift, not a pressure. And when the lights go up and the first note rings out, the nerves start to fade… replaced by the joy of making music together.
Whether you’re new to performing or a little stage-shy, know this: you belong here. Our choir lifts each other up, every step of the way.
Because when we support each other, we all shine a little brighter.
The Asheville Senior Chorus is an active Special Interest Group that meets every week as part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at UNC-Asheville. Led by Chuck Taft, they produce harmonious tunes while also building strong bonds and valuing shared moments. Their concerts feature a diverse range of musical styles and periods.
