Veterans Day Celebration 2026
- 11:00 am
- Weaverville Community Center, Weaverville, NC
This December, our director, Chuck Taft, will conduct Handel’s Messiah for the Weaverville Music Study Club, one of Western North Carolina’s longest-running community music traditions. The choir is open to everyone, with no audition, no experience required, and no cost to join. Whether you already sing with the Asheville Senior Chorus or simply love great choral music, we hope you’ll come sing with us.
Remember when the whole family gathered around the radio for the Christmas broadcast? (Or at least when your parents told you about it?) On Monday, December 14, the Asheville Senior Chorus is bringing that night back. We're turning the Reuter Center into a live radio studio for "Stay Tuned: A Christmas Radio Hour," broadcasting on W-SING, the only station in town with a whole chorus on staff. Free admission. Free parking after 5 PM with a UNCA visitor permit. Bring the family. Bring a friend who still misses the radio.
America turns 250 this fall, and the Asheville Senior Chorus is throwing the party the way Broadway always has. On Sunday, October 25 at 3 PM, the chorus presents "The House We Live In: Broadway Celebrates America at 250" at the Reuter Center on the UNC Asheville campus. The program is built like a parade through American history: George M. Cohan's flag-wavers, the founders of Hamilton and 1776, Irving Berlin's love letters to liberty, a stop at the ballpark, all fifty states in under three minutes, and a nearly lost Leonard Bernstein treasure written for the Bicentennial and heard by almost no one since. Twice, the parade pauses for a young soldier's letter home. Then it picks back up and marches to the finish, with the whole audience on its feet singing "God Bless America." Chuck Taft directs, with Eric Fricke at the piano. The afternoon runs about 75 minutes with selections from The Music Man, Show Boat, Oklahoma!, South Pacific, Ragtime, The Civil War, and Bernstein's 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, along with songs from the Broadway revues of 1918 and 1942 that gave America some of its most enduring anthems. Admission is free, and no tickets are required. Bring a friend, bring a flag, bring your voice. Featuring the world premiere of Shenandoah, arranged by our own Melanie Koebel. Parking: UNC Asheville requires a visitor permit, and before 5 PM it's $3. Register online before you come, or from your phone when you park: https://unca.aimsparking.com/permits/?cmd=new_non_auth
The Asheville Senior Choir is more than a musical group—it is a vibrant and cherished part of the community. Known for their heartfelt performances, they bring music to many of the region’s most treasured occasions, including the Asheville City Memorial Day ceremony, Weaverville’s Veterans Day tributes, and 9/11 commemorations. Their voices have graced the elegant halls of the Biltmore Estate and brought joy to audiences at welcoming venues such as Deerfield, Givens Estates, Highland Farms, and Ardenwoods. Since their inaugural season, they have upheld an unbroken tradition of performing at local events and ceremonies, strengthening bonds with communities in Asheville and neighboring towns including Woodfin, Fairview, Biltmore, Candler, and beyond. Their diverse repertoire bridges generations, fostering unity and connection through the shared experience of song.
Beyond the stage, the Asheville Senior Choir is a close-knit family. Members form lasting friendships, celebrating life’s milestones, sharing potluck dinners, and offering heartfelt support in times of need—whether through a warm card, a thoughtful gift, or words of encouragement. Singing together not only enriches the soul, it also offers proven health benefits, from boosting mood to enhancing cognitive function and overall well-being. Through regular rehearsals and uplifting performances, members create treasured memories and find renewed purpose in their shared love of music. With an open invitation to anyone who loves to sing, the Asheville Senior Choir blends artistry, camaraderie, and community spirit—making every gathering a joyful celebration of connection, compassion, and the enduring power of music.
